World peace, in the absolute sense: no wars, violence, or conflicts between nations or people, seems like a tall order given human history. We’ve had thousands of years of wars, although we have made some progress in reducing large scale conflicts. Achieving perfect peace, though, requires us overcoming a number of fundamental aspects of human nature.
It’s not impossible. We have a path to world peace if everyone truly lived by the words and teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus emphasized unconditional love, forgiveness, non-violence, and humility, ideas that promote empathy, reconciliation and selflessness over conflict, greed, or domination. In a world where every person lives by these principles, treating others as they’d want to be treated, prioritizing mercy over judgement, and seeking justice means other than force, we could overcome wars and violence.
Unfortunately, people are flawed, prone to temptation, fear, and self interests. Jesus himself acknowledged this, warning about the ‘narrow path’ to righteousness. Even his disciples struggled to live out his teachings consistently. Still, we as Christians must keep pushing towards it, and pray that future generations will find a way to follow his WORD more closely.
For us….we can take solace in the fact that we’ll get to experience perfect Peace when we enter God’s Kingdom, which Jesus described as the realm of justice and harmony.
